Luxury rides, tight budget: Officials defend $90K SUVs on taxpayers' dime
As Indiana lawmakers wrestle with how much to cut in a tight budget year, two top state officials find themselves defending the vehicles they chose for themselves — at taxpayer expense. IndyStar says the official cars of Lt. Gov. Beckwith and Secretary of State Morales are both luxury-laden SUVs, each priced at around $90,000. "It would be kind of funny," adds columnist James Briggs,* if these champions of government efficiency "weren't demanding everyone else do more with less."
* From Briggs: "Ah, but Indiana DOGE has masculine energy. The DOGE bros need big cars, heated steering wheels and quick access to helicopters. They don't care how many state budget cuts they need to make to eliminate unnecessary frills, as long as they get to keep theirs."
