Celebrating One Year with ReCenter Indiana

ReCenter Indiana first appeared in print last June, after an alert reporter came across the paperwork we had filed at the Statehouse. We established both ReCenter Indiana Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on civic education, and the ReCenter Indiana Political Action Committee to support candidates who share our values.

Our purpose was and is to reclaim the political center for a better Indiana. Despite skeptics, we’ve made headway and gained momentum in our first year. Our key accomplishments include:

  • Assembling a board of directors and advisory boards.

  • Launching a social media presence and a website, ReCenterIndiana.org.

  • Evaluating the Secretary of State race and endorsing Destiny Wells, who outperformed the Democrat at the top of the ticket by 6 points.

  • Holding our first strategic planning session with our board and advisers to establish a long-term vision.

  • Hiring a part-time executive director.

  • Evaluating and endorsing candidates in the Republican primaries for mayor in Evansville and Carmel. In each of those races, the most centrist candidate won, proving that it is, in fact, possible to elect centrists in Indiana.

As we approach our second year, we’re looking to build on those efforts, aiming to:

  • Re-evaluate the mayoral races in Evansville and Carmel for the general election in November.

  • Prepare for the 2024 governor’s race.

  • Identify other key Statehouse races for 2024.

  • Build a Gen Z strategy to engage and energize young voters, a critical voting bloc who demonstrated their potential influence in the 2022 midterms.

  • Hire a full-time executive director to accelerate our efforts.

  • Actively engage with our political advisers and communities to promote centrist policies and values.

Moving Indiana politics back to the center is challenging. It requires patience and a long-term commitment. We are grateful to everyone who has stood with us. As antidemocratic posturing and policies plague our state and nation, our mission is more critical than ever. We hope you’ll support our efforts by sharing our story, following us on social media, and – if you can — donating to our cause.
